10 Perfect Things to Do on the Hammock Coast®
Ready to get back to the beach? There’s nothing quite like a vacation at one of the Hammock Coast’s beautiful, quiet little hamlets. If you’re headed to one of these spots for a summer vacation, we’ve got tips on things to do on the Hammock Coast to keep everyone in your group relaxed and happy.
1. Soak in Some Rays
With miles and miles of beaches along the Hammock Coast, there are plenty of places to pitch your umbrella and beach chair and get your toes in the sand. Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet is one of those. Litchfield Beach and Pawleys Island both offer miles of pristine coastline. Some of our TideLife Vacation Rentals are located beachside, so ask when you book your trip.
2. Take a Lowcountry Tour
The Carolina Rover and Cap’n Rod’s Lowcountry Tours both launch from Georgetown and take passengers on shelling and lighthouse tours.
3. Go Crabbing
There are lots of piers where you can drop a crab net or try the “old-fashioned” crabbing with some string, a swing net, and a chicken leg. The best spot is at the oyster sell recycling area just south of the southern split of Highway 17 Bypass and 17 Business in Murrells Inlet.
4. Paddle Out
If you enjoy kayaking, take a guided tour with Black River Outdoors Center on Pawleys Island. They get you out on the marshes, rivers, hidden creeks, and swamps for a very different view of the coast.
5. Catch Some Waves
Surf the Earth in Pawleys Island offers surfing lessons as well as a surfboard, paddleboard, and kayak rentals. There also offer surf camps throughout the summer.
6. See the View Down Under
Whether you’re a certified diver or want to take lessons, Express Watersports in Murrells Inlet has you covered. You can even take a Discover Scuba Diving course to see if it’s right for you. Charters take divers out to view historic wrecks and view plenty of sea life. They also offer an array of charters, sunset cruises, parasailing, Jet Ski rentals, and more.
7. Explore a Castle
Atalaya Castle, located at Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet, is a 30-room mansion perched on the edge of dunes and overlooking the ocean. The Spanish-Moors style compound is like nothing you’ve seen before. The grounds and building are open daily.
8. Hunt for Ghosts
If you’re brave, take a lantern-led walking tour with Ghosts of Georgetown along the haunted harbor. Your guide will regale you with tales of those lost at sea, historic pirate hauntings, and lovelorn ghosts.
9. Play a Round
The Hammock Coast is home to almost 100 championship golf courses, so if you’re a golfer, you’re in luck. Plus several of our rentals put you right on the course, including TB 13D, TB 68B, PP 90-1, and others.
10. Time Travel
The Hammock Coast offers an array of former rice and tobacco plantations, many of which are open for tours. Hopsewee Plantation in Georgetown is an original Lowcountry rice plantation built on the North Santee River between 1735 and 1740. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Georgetown is also home to the Hampton Plantation, Kaminski House Museum, and the South Carolina Maritime Museum.
Whatever you’re in the mood for, there are plenty of things to do on a Hammock Coast vacation.
