Discover the Perfect Picnic Spot on the Hammock Coast

When was the last time you went on a picnic? Picnics provide a perfect opportunity to appreciate the great outdoors while bonding with the family. Hammock Coast visitors will find a plethora of places to set up a lunch or sunset picnic. We’ve listed some of our favorite. On your next visit, don’t forget the basic (or cooler)!

First, pick up provisions at one of the local grocers in Pawleys Island or Murrells Inlet. There are plenty: Bi Lo, The Fresh Market, Food Lion, Publix and Lowes Food. Grab some fried chicken or sandwich fixings at the deli, fresh fruit, bread, water or juice, and maybe a bottle of wine.

As for where to spread out your picnic blanket, head to the north public access on Pawleys Island for a beachside spot. It’s not usually as occupied as the public beach on the south end of the island, so picnickers can enjoy a quieter outdoor experience.

Huntington Beach State Park on Murrells Inlet offers ample picnic spots and is a favorite for families. There are plenty of activities and places to explore, as well as shaded picnic tables by Atalaya Castle. Hike through the swampy woods in search of alligators or look for crabs along the boardwalk. The park offers three miles of beach, two main nature trails and boardwalks over the saltwater marsh. Be sure to pack bug spray and sunscreen along with those picnic goodies.

Stay at Pawleys Pearl, a three-bedroom, top-floor condo property, where guests have access to a Huntington Beach State Park pass. It is a quiet, peaceful setting on the True Blue Golf Course, where you can while away the time on the private screened porch swing.

For a picnic adventure, book an Island Picnic Cruise out of Georgetown. This five and a half hour eco-tour takes passengers to a remote barrier island to enjoy beachcombing, wading and sunbathing. There is always a chance of spotting a dolphin on the ride out. No reason to pack a lunch for this picnic charter. The lunches are provided by Front Street Deli and are available for an additional $15.

Or, if you prefer to stay close to your home base, book our Hawk’s Nest Bay vacation rental in North Litchfield. New to the rental program, the five-bedroom rental has its own picnic site, with a private pool, fire pit and new gas grill. The home also features a huge screened porch, upper deck and backyard deck, perfect for grilling. Use the fully equipped kitchen to whip up some potato salad or cole slaw. You certainly can’t beat that for a coastal picnic.
