Birdwatching

With such a biodiverse environment and hundreds of species of birds, it’s no surprise that birders and nature lovers come from near and far to visit the Grand Strand! It’s considered to be the best birding area in South Carolina and some of the best in the Southeast, so it’s easy to find a nature trail teeming with local wildlife. Take a leisurely stroll and feel your shoulders loosen as the sound of bird songs and waves lapping the shore fills the air. If you’re looking for popular birding locations, try Huntington Beach State Park, Brookgreen Gardens, and Hobcaw Barony!

 Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach in Merrell’s Inlet is a beautiful place to go birding and enjoy nature. Here you will find 3 miles of beaches, trails with panoramic vistas, wildlife such as loggerhead turtles, and 330 species of birds, including the difficult-to-spot roseate spoonbill and piping plover! Head to Sandpiper Pond Trail and explore the boardwalks that reach into the freshwater lagoon and salt marsh, you might even see an alligator on the trail!

Brookgreen Gardens

At the stunning Brookgreen Gardens, there are even more opportunities for sightings in their manicured gardens. They even offer daily bird of prey shows at its Lowcountry zoo.

Hobcaw Barony

Birders also should not skip the Hobcaw Barony near Georgetown. Its location on Winyah Bay is home to thousands of acres of preserved ecosystems. This area full of longleaf pine forests has the perfect habitat for Bachman’s Sparrow and is also host to Red-cockaded Woodpecker colonies.
